Pumpkins, Pumpkins, Everywhere!


The Creative Corner
5 Little Pumpkins...

Tuesday-October 4th
Pumpkin Parts
Junebugs will observe as their teacher cuts open a big, orange pumpkin to reveal what is inside.  They will love getting their hands dirty as they touch the pulp and find the seeds.

Pumpkin Picassos
Junebugs will use their imaginations and a variety of art materials to decorate a card stock pumpkin.

Pumpkin Cookies
Junebugs will roll out sugar cookie dough and use cookie cutters to make pumpkin shaped cookies for snack time.

Thursday-October 6th
Seed Sorting
Junebugs will practice counting and sorting (by color) brightly dyed pumpkin seeds.  They will then glue them to a piece of construction paper to create an abstract work of art.


Paper Bag Pumpkin
Junebugs will use their fine motor skills to shred tissue paper and stuff it into paper bags to turn them into fat little pumpkin decorations.   
  
Toasted Seed Tasting
Junebugs will help their teachers to toast and then taste test salted pumpkin seeds.
  

Circle Time Routine
Educational. Social. Playful.

Greeting
Find and sit on your circle time mat.  Greet your friends with the song 'Hello Neighbor!'.  Read Fly High Little Bird.

Morning Stretch
"Point to your nose, reach down to your toes, wiggle your hips, and bend your elbows.  Reach up high to the sky,  reach down low to the floor, stretch to the window, and stretch to the door.  Whisper 'shhhhh' and sit quietly on the floor."

Morning Work
Calendar
Sing the "Seven Days In A Week".  Discuss today's theme and activities.

Weather
Observe the weather through the window and discuss proper clothing using flashcards.

Numbers
Count to 10 on your fingers.  Sing along with 'Ten Little Numbers'.

Letters
Sing the 'ABCs' with instruments.  Rap the 'ABC's' with Elmo.  Listen to 'Chicka, Chicka, Boom, Boom'.  Color the letter of the day (P is for pumpkin) and glue it into your notebook.

Fire Safety Week

Fire Safety Week!

Stop. Drop. Roll.

Tuesday-September 27th
Firefighter Puppet Play
Junebugs will color a firefighter glued to a popsicle stick to make a firefighter puppet.  They will use them to put on a puppet play about fire safety.

Fingerprint Pups
Junebugs will add black spots to a white dog cut out to create adorable firehouse dalmatian dogs. 

Our First Fire Drill
Junebugs will practice lining up quietly and exiting the house as quickly and as safely as possible.

Thursday-September 29th
Smoke Science
Junebugs will learn what smoke looks like and why it is dangerous as they safely observe its formation in a mason jar.


Egg Carton Fire Engines
Junebugs will create bright red firetrucks using a variety of materials including paint, egg cartons and popsicle sticks.   
  
Stop, Drop and Roll Drill
Junebugs will practice stopping, dropping and rolling to put out fires on clothing and staying low to escape smoke.

We are looking forward to starting your little one's fire safety education!  You can continue our fire safety theme at home with two fun opportunities to support our local firefighters and play on real firetrucks!


This Sunday, October 2, from 8am-12pm, the Ashburn Volunteer Fire Department is hosting their monthly Pancake Breakfast.  Cost is $6 per adult, FREE for kids 3 and under.


On Sunday, October 9th from 12-3:30 please join us for a Junebug Field Trip to the AVFD Open House!  This is a free event where our kids can learn more about fire safety, meet the firemen, and ride on the trucks among other things.  We would love to see you all there!  Visit the AVFD website for more details and directions.  *PLEASE NOTE - parking is available at Cedar Lane elementary on Tolomac Road and the AVFD is providing free shuttle service to the station*

Apples Galore!

Apples Galore!


The Creative Corner
An apple a day...

Tuesday-September 13th
Seed Science
Junebugs will become little scientists as they help the teachers dissect an apple.  They will observe and discuss the apple’s seeds before sprinkling them onto glue to create an original work of art. 

Apple Art Place Mat
Junebugs will have some messy hands-on fun as they create beautiful masterpieces by stamping apple halves into paint and onto a large piece of butcher paper.  Their artwork will be laminated and returned to them to use as a place mat. 

Sweet Snack
Junebugs will enjoy eating apples with honey and cheese.

Thursday-September 8th
Fingertip Trees
Junebugs will have some messy, hands-on fun as they create adorable apple trees by stamping their fingertips into red paint and then onto their paper apple trees.


Craft Clips
Junebugs will design apple-themed refrigerator clips to showcase all of the their lovely artwork by painting wooden apples and gluing them onto magnetic clothes pins.   
  
A Baker's Dozen
Or is that a dozen bakers?!  Junebugs will become chefs as they help their teachers sprinkle cinnamon and sugar onto apples.  The teachers will bake the apples and the Junebugs will enjoy the delicious apple crisps at snack time.
